Official Bio

Dr. Rachel Pruchno is a research scientist, author, and national voice on aging, mental illness, and resilience.

She earned her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State, and has spent over four decades investigating how people grow, cope, and thrive across the lifespan. For 20 years, she served as Endowed Professor of Medicine and Director of Research at Rowan University’s New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging. Over the course of her career, she secured nearly $20 million in funding from the NIH and private foundations. Dr. Pruchno is the longest-serving Editor-in-Chief of The Gerontologist, one of the top academic journals in aging. She is now affiliated with University of South Florida’s School of Aging Studies.

Her work has appeared in more than 125 peer-reviewed scientific journals, and her voice has shaped national policy conversations on caregiving, health equity, and mental illness.

Rachel’s forthcoming book, Becoming Zestie, is the culmination of ORANJ BOWL, a 15-year longitudinal project that followed 6,000 adults across New Jersey. Her findings challenge everything we think we know about aging, revealing that success has less to do with health or wealth, and everything to do with learned behaviors.

Through books, editorials, keynotes, and national media appearances, Rachel is on a mission to shift how we think and talk about growing older.

She’s been married to Jonathan Brill, Ph.D., for 40 years. They recently moved to Florida, where they live with their adorable coonhounds, Brady and Chester.
